There is an awesome power in the human voice and when uncommon voices are blended for the common good, they become a ‘vocal community’ at its best. Masterfully led by Dr. Ysaÿe M. Barnwell, singers and non-singers alike will share the common experience of learning in the oral tradition and singing traditional songs from Africa and the Diaspora, and a variety of songs from African American culture including spirituals, gospels, ring shouts, hymns, and songs from the Civil Rights Movement. The historical, social, and political context will be provided as an introduction to the songs. All that is required is a willingness to sing.
Join us for a playful and enlivening workshop to explore the unclaimed territories of your Voice. Using the Five Elements framework designed by Barbara McAfee, we will journey into the full spectrum of the Voice using the elements of Earth, Fire, Water, Metal, and Air. Together, we’ll use group-singing practices and playful exploration to connect more fully with our authentic voice as Women, and ultimately to our full aliveness. All voices are welcome, and no singing experience required.
Join us for an enlivening afternoon of group singing exercises, and learn songs that you can take home to share with your community. Together, we’ll learn a collection of songs for social change – for justice, for solidarity, and for courage in these changing times. We’ll also explore the history of group singing movements worldwide, and how the joining of voices in song can build bridges of harmony, creating positive change in the world. All voices are welcome – no singing experience is required.
