FAQ

Have questions? We have answers! Here are some frequently asked questions about Sing for Joy…

I HAVE NEVER SUNG IN A GROUP BEFORE. AM I GOOD ENOUGH TO SING WITH YOUR GROUP?

Yes, absolutely. Sing for Joy welcomes all voices, and requires no singing experience ~ just a desire to sing with others in harmony. All of our songs are taught by ear, through call-and-response, and no musical note reading is necessary. We provide a safe, accepting, non-judgemental space for you to find your voice. If you love to sing, or want to give it a try, this is the place for you.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO SING?

Sing for Joy is unique from traditional choirs in that we don’t use sheet music or written words. Our songs are learned in the oral tradition of call-and-response, drawing from many cultures and backgrounds. They reflect a diversity of roots, origins, and inspirations. We choose songs that you can weave into the rhythm of your daily life, and take home to share with your loved ones. To hear some of the songs that we’ll be singing together, click here to visit our Song page.

WHERE IS IT HELD?

Sing for Joy has three locations to choose from, in the Riverdale, Junction and Annex neighbourhoods of Toronto. Please go to our registration page for current details.

HOW CAN I JOIN?

You are welcome to join Sing for Joy at any time. To register in advance for the full 12-week series, visit our registration page.

CAN I COME AND TRY IT OUT BEFORE SIGNING UP? OR JUST DROP IN WHEN I HAVE TIME?

Yes! If you are curious about singing with us, you are welcome to drop in any time during the season, to see how you like it. If you want to sign up for the series after we’ve already started, that’s no problem — we will pro-rate your registration for the remaining time. And for those not able to commit on a weekly basis, you are welcome to drop in whenever it works best for you.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR OUR SESSIONS?

There is no need to prepare, practice, or rehearse anything! We will learn the songs each week, together, and build upon them over time. Please arrive five minutes early to settle in before we begin, and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.

I AM ON A FIXED INCOME AND CAN’T AFFORD IT RIGHT NOW. AM I STILL ABLE TO PARTICIPATE?

Yes. We have a few volunteer opportunities and scholarships available for each season. Please contact Mila if you would like to inquire about these opportunities.
