A Weekend with Special Guest Laurence Cole

SING FOR JOY PRESENTS: A WEEKEND WITH SPECIAL GUEST LAURENCE COLE
OCTOBER 29-30, 2016

We are thrilled to welcome Songleader Laurence Cole to the City of Toronto, to share songs of belonging that nourish the soul and re-enchant the world with song. Laurence brings a wealth of experience and inspiration to the community singing movement, with over 70 years of songleading and music making. He travels extensively to share his love of group singing with people far and wide, and leads the Songlines Choir in his home of Port Townsend, Washington. This will be Laurence’s first Canadian tour, and his first time in the Province of Ontario. Please join us in welcoming Laurence!

Laurence Says: “Part of my mission is to re-acquaint people with their birthright and natural ability to make beautiful and meaningful sound together. Group singing is one of the most ancient and primal ‘technologies of belonging’ that we humans have been using since our earliest times, possibly before speech itself. When we make joyous and passionate song together, it nourishes our souls and offers an enlivening gift back to the natural world. When such an exchange is genuinely made, and the song finds its natural ending, often there is a sweet, lively silence in which we simply stand and hold the ‘enchantment,’ the sense of deep and genuine communion.”

WORKSHOP: SONGS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE & EARTH STEWARDSHIP
Saturday, October 29
2 – 4 pm

Songs and the practice of singing together, are a vital tool for navigating our changing world. Songs help us to build a sense of connection and harmony with each other and the planet. They call forth our collective courage and passion, enliven us and inspire us to play our part in creating a life-sustaining society. Songs help us to plant the seeds of hope and renewal during times of change, re-awakening trust in ourselves and each other. In this workshop, we will explore, through song and story, some of the prevailing themes related to climate change and earth stewardship. Laurence will guide the group through a series of songs that are easy to learn and sing in groups.

This workshop is open to everyone. No singing experience is required. Please bring a journal and/or recording device if you would like to share these songs with your community.
Tickets: $25

WORKSHOP: SONG-WRITING & THE ART OF LISTENING
Sunday, October 30
2 – 5 pm

What is your song? What story do you wish to tell through song? As humans in this ever changing world, we all have songs within – songs of joy and praise, songs of pain and sorrow, songs of celebration, revelation, and renewal. In this workshop, Laurence will guide the group in a process of deep listening, to explore and call forth our own song within. There will be time together as a full group, as well as time in smaller clusters to connect more deeply with each other and our voice. We will explore the practice of mirroring, as we listen and witness the stories of our fellow participants. Together, through a process of listening, we will welcome the unfolding of new songs to be born.

This workshop is open to everyone. No song-writing or singing experience is required.
Tickets: $30
